Position Chair, Department of Communicative Sciences and Disorders

The University of Montana, School of Education seeks a nationally-recognized senior faculty member to serve in the capacity of Chair to help create a new Department of Communicative Sciences and Disorders. Program offerings will include a Bachelor of Arts in Communicative Disorders and a Master of Science degree in Speech-Language Pathology.
The Chair will report to the dean and will be responsible for program development, pursuit of CAA-ASHA candidacy and accreditation, and ongoing leadership for the department, its faculty, and students. Ideally, the appointment for the Chair would begin August 22, 2007, with initial student enrollment planned for autumn semester, 2008.
Responsibilities:
The Chair’s responsibilities for the program development period include: curricula development/approval; leadership of faculty recruitment efforts; provision of leadership and oversight for facility renovation, equipment purchase, and expansion of library holdings; recruitment and admission of initial master’s cohort; undergraduate student recruitment and advising; establishment of clinical experiences/sites; CAA-ASHA candidacy application and progress reports; and other initiatives requisite for effective program operations beginning autumn term, 2008.
Ongoing Chair’s responsibilities include:
- Providing ongoing leadership, vision and strategic planning for the department and its programs.
- Fostering excellence in teaching; scholarship and externally funded research; and service to the community, state and profession.
- Management of the department’s budget, facilities, equipment and other resources.
- Leading the department’s accreditation pursuits – initial and continuing.
- Provision of leadership and mentoring for faculty and students, and participation in the faculty evaluation process.
- Developing and nurturing community and clinical partnerships.
- Advocacy for the department and its contributions to the School of Education, The University, the community and state.
- Teaching, research and service as a faculty member in the unit.
- Participating in school-wide planning and policy formulation.

Qualifications:
Required
- Earned doctorate (PhD or EdD) in Speech-Language Pathology or Audiology, or closely related field
- Evidence of excellence in teaching at the higher education level
- Record of scholarship and professional/clinical service sufficient to merit appointment at the Associate or Full Professor level
- Demonstrated leadership ability
Preferred
- Clinical certification in Speech-Language Pathology or Audiology
- Evidence of successful academic administrative experience at the University level
- Experience with CAA-ASHA accreditation process
