Dance Classes

Students enrolling in courses taught at UM's Fitness and Recreation Center must present a Griz Card validating that the Campus Recreation Fee has been paid for that semester.
NOTE: For all HHP 101-179 courses:
- There are additional fees with some courses that are noted with that course.
- Attendance policy strictly enforced- classes missed prior to and after late registration count towards total absences allowed.
- Auditing of HHP 101-179 courses is not allowed.
HHP 163/165 Salsa Dance
An introduction to Salsa Dancing will provide an outstanding foundation for anyone wanting to become a competent Salsa dancer on any social dance floor, and even provide a base for students wishing to eventually become performance or competitive Salsa dancers. Components of this class include: break down of various rhythms found in Salsa, dance floor etiquette, learning to lead and follow, and creating interesting combinations. Graded Credit/No Credit. Equipment needs: Appropriate dress to dance (layers and clothing that is easy to move in is recommended) and socks or clean, non-marking dance or gym shoes.
HHP 164 Ballroom Dance
An introduction to Ballroom Dancing will provide an outstanding foundation for social and competitive dancing. Learn the basics of ballroom including fox trot, waltz, swing, cha-cha, rumba, tango, and more. Learn dance floor etiquette, how to lead and follow, and creating interesting combinations. Graded Credit/No Credit. Equipment needs: Appropriate dress to dance in and socks or clean, non-marking dance or gym shoes.
HHP 167 Bellydance
This course will provide a foundation in basic movements, rhythms, history, and culture as it relates to Middle Eastern dance. Explore the difference between various styles of dance while increasing flexibility, range of motion, muscle strength, improved balance, coordination, and posture. Graded Credit/No Credit. Equipment Needs: Appropriate Dress, loose fitting clothing.
HHP 167 Introduction to Hula
Learn basics of Hula as well as background and fundamentals of the Hawaiian dance. This class will explore hula implements, hula Kahiko, Tahitian and Maori dances. Graded Credit/No Credit. Equipment Needs: Appropriate Dress, loose fitting clothing.
HHP 167 Tribal Style Belly Dance
This class explores the basic movements of the improvisational language of Tribal Belly Dance. Emphasis is placed on posture and will focus on core strength, isolations, musical interpretation, and improvisation. Graded Credit/No Credit. Equipment Needs: Appropriate dress, loose fitting clothing.
