K-12 Principal Licensure Requirements for Degree Holding Students
(Individuals holding a master's degree in an area eligible for licensure in Montana)
Core Courses
- EDLD 550: Foundations of Educational Leadership 3 credits
- EDLD 551: Foundations of Curriculum & Instruction 3 credits
- EDLD 552: Supervision & Evaluation of Public School Teachers 3 credits
- EDLD 554: School Law 3 credits
- EDLD 556: Finance of Public Education 3 credits
- EDLD 559: Public Relations for Principals 3 credits
- EDLD 568 K-12 Curriculum & Instruction 3 credits
- EDLD 567 K-12 Leadership 3 credits
Additional Requirements for all Principal Licensure
- Master's degree in an approved school administration program or the equivalent.
- Eligibility for the Class 1 or Class 2 teaching license (individual does not need to hold a Montana teaching license but must be eligible to hold one).
- Verification of a minimum of three years of successful teaching experience as an appropriately licensed and assigned K-12 teacher.
Note : Montana law requires that any applicant for initial licensure, any person seeking emergency authorization of employment, or any applicant seeking to reinstate a lapsed, revoked or suspended license must submit information and material for a fingerprint-based national criminal history background check.

Superintendent Licensure Requirements for Degree Holding Students
(Individuals holding a master's degree in an area eligible for licensure in Montana)
Core Courses
- EDLD 550: Foundations of Educational Leadership 3 credits
- EDLD 551: Foundations of Curriculum & Instruction 3 credits
- EDLD 552: Supervision & Evaluation of Public School Teachers 3 credits
- EDLD 554: School Law 3 credits
- EDLD 556: Finance of Public Education 3 credits
- EDLD 559: Public Relations for Principals 3 credits
- EDLD 567 K-12 Leadership 3 credits
- EDLD 568 K-12 Curriculum & Instruction 3 credits
In addition to the core courses listed above, the following courses are required :
- EDLD 658: School Public Relations for Superintendents 3 credits
- EDLD 653: School Personnel Administration 3 credits
- EDLD 656: Economics of Public Education 3 credits
- EDLD 657: Facilities Planning 3 credits
Additional requirements :
- Twelve (12) semester credits in administration beyond the master's degree in Educational Administration.
- One year of experience as an appropriately licensed principal, assistant principal, supervisor or one year of a supervised internship.
