Description
The Doctor of Education degree is the terminal degree in Educational Leadership. This advanced degree program increases the knowledge, expertise, and skill base in Educational Leadership; enhances and refines the research skills and competencies of students; and provides the required terminal degree for those students seeking administrative or teaching positions in higher education or those seeking positions of increased responsibility in K-12 schools. A minimum of 90 credits, including credits from an approved master’s degree and/or education specialist degree, is required for the Doctor of Education degree. The major field of concentration is in Educational Leadership with supporting concentrations in either Curriculum Leadership or Higher Education. In the final analysis, the total number of credits required for this degree will be dependent on the chosen career emphasis, course work transferred into the program, and the department’s appraisal of course work needed for satisfactory degree completion.
The Department of Educational Leadership provides two means by which an Ed.D. degree can be obtained, and both require 90 semester credits but include work done in a master’s degree prior to application for the doctorate. In the traditional degree program, students attend courses on campus, usually in the evenings. The doctoral cohort program provides a course of study over weekends and better accommodates those who work during the week and cannot travel to campus to attend courses. Although both programs are offered in Missoula, some students find the weekend cohort program to better fit their schedules. Cohorts begin when there are a sufficient number of students interested.
