Program of Study
Applicants to the Ed.S. should have a master's degree in Counseling
or a very closely related field. The exact course requirements for
the degree will depend on the quality and content of the student's
previous masters degree and on the student’s career goals.
The student's advisor will compare the student’s transcript
to the Program’s masters degree and options. Together they
will develop an individualized program of study.
The following general requirements apply to Ed.S. programs:
• A minimum of 64 credits, including the master's degree. Depending on specific career goals, the number of credits may exceed this.
• A minimum of 28 semester credits must be in Counseling. At least half of these credits (14) must be University of Montana credits.
• A minimum of 18 semester credits must be taken subsequent to Ed.S. program acceptance.
• Students are advised to consult with the advisor about possible additional requirements in their area of study.
• Exceptions to the above must be approved by the student's advisor, the Program faculty and the Graduate School. Such approval is unlikely.
Other Ed.S. requirements:
• An additional research course, as determined by the student's advisor.
• Additional credits of clinical experience, as determined by the student's advisor.
• A professional paper or project: A professional effort of at least two and not more than six semester credits is required. An oral examination centered upon, but not necessarily limited to this effort is required. You must be registered for at least two professional paper credits while working on the paper. It is not possible to complete the professional paper during the summer only. You must work on the paper or project and be available during the academic year.
• Counseling Skills: All Ed.S. students will receive clinical supervision by program faculty during their studies and must enroll in advanced clinical training course work, as determined by the student's advisor.
• Computer Skills: All Ed.S. students will be able to use the Internet for communication and research. They will also be proficient in the use of a major word processing program.
