Intercultural Youth and Family Development



 
 

Degree Offered

M.A. Intercultural Youth and Family Development

Requirements: 34-36 credits involving two full academic semesters averaging 16 credits of course work plus independent study, and a year or more internship in an applied setting.

An orientation will be held specifically for the IYFD program about 1-2 weeks prior to the start of the academic year in August. 

Curriculum: Students accepted into the Intercultural Youth and Family Development Master's degree will have the following core requirements:

Fall Term

12-18 credits as follows:

  • 3 credits, Intercultural aspects of human development I
  • 3 credits, Introduction to counseling, theory and gender
  • 2 credits, Applied intercultural service skills (conflict resolution and grant writing)
  • 2 credits, Special topics seminar
  • 2-8 credits, Elective or independent study course work covering the religious, economic, social and cultural history of the region of the globe which the student has targeted for internship

Spring Term

12-18 credits as follows:

  • 3 credits, Intercultural aspects of human development II
  • 3 credits, Multicultural counseling
  • 2 credits, Special topics seminar
  • 3 credits, Course in one of the following: research methods, program evaluation, community assessment, or non-profit management
  • 1-7 credits, Elective or independent study course work covering the religious, economic, social and cultural history of the region of the globe which the student has targeted for internship.

Second Year/Third Year

  • Length and credits will depend on agency and placement site.
  • This requirement can be satisfied by Peace Corps service (27 months).

Portfolio, Professional Project, or Thesis

  • This requirement must be completed prior to graduation, but may be done either prior to or in connection with the Internship.

Elective courses may be selected from the following academic areas, or others with approval from the faculty advisor. Students should identify electives which fit their particular areas of interest and concern.
