Literacy Studies Options

State of Montana Reading Specialists K-12 Endorsement 

ENDORSEMENT OFFERS:

  • State of Montana Reading Specialist K-12 certification
  • Academic and field-based experience

STUDENT OUTCOMES

Students will:

1. demonstrate knowledge of the foundations of reading and writing processes and instruction;

2. demonstrate knowledge and understanding of individual, cultural, linguistic, and ethnic diversity in the teaching process;

3. demonstrate instructional practices, approaches, methods, and curriculum materials to support reading and writing instruction;

4. demonstrate assessment tools and practices to plan and evaluate effective reading instruction; and

5. integrate knowledge and practices to monitor and evaluate the reading program and student learning.

Master of Education in Literacy Education (M.Ed.)

DEGREE OFFERS:

  • M.Ed. core courses
  • Training in the role of a literacy specialist and/or supervisor
  • Academic, research, and field-based experiences
  • State of Montana Reading Specialists K-12 endorsement certification

STUDENT OUTCOMES

Graduate students will:

1. successfully complete 19 credits of M.Ed. core courses:

2. demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the strands of literacy: psychological, developmental, cultural, political, and historical;

3. apply knowledge of the current research and theory that drives literacy instruction in a K-12 curriculum;

4. demonstrate knowledge and competence in diagnosis and remediation of reading and writing;

5. demonstrate knowledge of the role of the literacy specialist or consultant within the school and community;

6. demonstrate assessment tools and practices to plan and evaluate effective reading instruction:

7. demonstrate knowledge and understanding of cultural diversity, learning styles, and linguistic differences;

8. participate in a supervised practicum with children and youth in developmental, corrective, and accelerated reading instruction; and

9. pass a written comprehensive examination.
