Master of Education (M.Ed.) Graduate Preparation Project

Announces
The Graduate Preparation Project
Master of Education in Curriculum Studies With Course Work in Early Childhood Special Education
PURPOSES

The goal of the five-year Graduate Preparation Project is to offer a two or three-year Master of Education in Curriculum Studies with an emphasis in Early Childhood Special Education. The Program is competency-based and designed to provide advanced training in early childhood education, early childhood special education, inclusion, and strategies for young children with severe disabilities. The Program uses state-of-the-art distance education techniques as well as an intensive face-to-face practical experience. Further, the Graduate Preparation Project places a premium on focused field experiences to the extent that students must participate in a field-based experience every semester they are enrolled. While students may enter the program with a variety of backgrounds (i.e., experience in early childhood education, special education, or elementary education), all students will leave the program with the expertise to meet practitioner standards presented by the Division for Early Childhood (DEC) and the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC).

DESCRIPTION

The Graduate Preparation Project will recruit students who already have an undergraduate degree. The area that the undergraduate degree represents, however, may vary. Specifically, the Project will primarily recruit students who either have an education degree with an early childhood education minor, a special education degree, or an elementary education degree without a focus in either early childhood education or early childhood special education. All students, regardless of educational background, will take the core courses required for a Master of Education Degree in Curriculum and Instruction at UM-Missoula. Currently, these core courses are offered in a distance-based format. Qualified participants receive monetary compensation that includes full tuition/fees, textbooks, and a participation stipend. Qualified participants may also receive technology support such as software or computer upgrades, and travel expenses for a week-long summer seminar. Recruitment will be ongoing for the next four years.

INTERESTED PARTICIPANTS

Individuals interested in participating in the Project must a) complete applications to the appropriate UM-Missoula Curriculum programs (suitable to background and previous education), and b) complete the Graduate Preparation Project Application. Requirements include the ability to work independently, 15-20 hours per week in an early childhood setting to implement course activities, and service obligation to the field. To get started, review the UM-Missoula Graduate School Admission and Application Process at http://life.umt.edu/grad/name/applyadmission. Since this project is new as of October 1, 2004, interested individuals should continue to watch the C&I web site http://www.soe.umt.edu/cni/master_ed for more information specifically about the Graduate Preparation Project (GPP).
