Shaping the Future of Montana and Beyond

A Case for Support for the School of Education

The UM School of Education is a leader in its field; but through its greatest assets - a committed faculty, gifted and conscientious students and insightful leadership - it has the tools at its disposal to take the next great step. Our goal is to increase the stature of the School of Education so that it becomes a vital force in the shaping of health and education policy and practice throughout the West, with its work influencing decisions made - not only in Helena - but also in Washington, D.C. We envision the School of Education becoming a major player in shaping professional practices that contribute to the development of human potential-at the community, regional, national, and international levels.

We hope you will consider a gift of support for the School of Education to help the School achieve its goals. Annual gifts are solicited by the Excellence Fund program for the School and provide for unanticipated opportunities such as student and faculty travel, events, distance technologies, students groups, and this year for updating HHP facilities. At the same time that you make regular annual gifts, you might also consider a contribution to establish a permanent endowment, help remodel or build new structures, or meet other capital needs. You can add to an existing endowment or establish one in your own name or that of someone you would like to honor or remember.

Following is a list of some of the priority needs that Paul Rowland has identified for the School of Education :

Scholarships provide funding that allows the School to attract and retain high quality students. Opportunities are available for permanent endowments, annual scholarships, and additions to current scholarship funds.

Opportunity Funds are permanent endowments that provide for ever-changing opportunities within the School.

An Endowed Lecture Series will provide our faculty, educators in Western Montana and our education students with opportunities to interact with leading scholars who are investigating education's "hot topics."

The Native American Clearninghouse will be the central locus for identifying the multitude of resources that are available in Native American education.

An Outreach Endowment will help the School to communicate to practicing professionals and the interested public the projects underway at the School and the latest trends in the field.

A Scholar-In-Residence Program will bring preeminent, compassionate educators and professionals in Montana to work with the School's resident faculty and students.

An Endowed Chair in Educational Technology will bring a high-level expert in the field of educational technology on our campus to allow the School to plan and execute the most effective, efficient and inclusive use of distance technologies for the delivery of education to our future educators.

Endowed Graduate Fellowships will enable the School to be competitive in attracting the most talented students to The University of Montana.

Professional Development Scholarships are for those practicing professionals who want to either continue in their positions as educators or take short leaves-of-absence while they continue to upgrade their skills.

The Educational Technology Center will be an addition to the current Education Building to provide students and faculty access to a world-class learning environment, so that they can benefit from its use in their own learning environment, and so that they can pass the techniques learned on to their students.

Department of Health and Human Performance Building Renovation and Equipment will enable the faculty to convert their newly acquired space from locker rooms to laboratories, dance studios to classrooms, and offices to training facilities.
