About the School

History

In the early years of The University of Montana, what has now become the School of Education was a part of the Department of Philosophy and Education.

In 1913, a separate Department of Education was formed and in 1917 the first master's degree in education was awarded. The department was also among the first to offer doctoral work although the Ed. D. degree was not instituted until 1955.

In 1930, the department became the School of Education with the appointment of Dr. Freeman Daughters as dean of the new school. At that time, the faculty of the school included W.E. Maddock and W. R. Ames in addition to Dr. Daughters. Soon after, the School was recognized by the Montana State Department of Public Instruction as a teacher training institution.

In 1950, the School of Education joined Business Administration in the new Business and Education Building . A decade later, the School of Education moved into the Liberal Arts Building. In 1996, Education moved back into their old (and current) home in the Education Building.

Over the years, the departmental structure of the School evolved; the department of education was joined by Health and Physical Education (now Health and Human Performance) and in 1980 Home Economics joined the school. (The program was later dropped by the university but two faculty members, Professors Bachmann and Peterson, continue to work in the School of Education.) The department of Professional Education later split to become two departments: Curriculum and Instruction and Educational Leadership and Counseling. In 1956, the Division of Educational Research and Service was added to the academic departments.
